SPOWART 2023 WINNER CHRIS YEOMANS

SPOWART 2023 – SPONSORED BY SIMPSONS MALT LTD

WINNER – CHRIS YEOMANS

August bank holiday Monday witnessed one of the greatest individual bowling tournaments held in this region for a considerable number of years, with over eighty entries for the Simpsons Malt Ltd sponsored Spowart Trophy. Jacks were high from nine thirty at both Tweedmouth and Spittal greens and the knock out rounds continued, with Tweedmouth green hosting the eventual quarters, semis and final. The final itself was a cross border international affair with Chris Yeomans (England International from Gosforth) eventually overcoming the sterling efforts of Joyce Dickey (Scotland International from Hawick) in a thrilling contest. This was history in the making as our archivist has confirmed Joyce is the first lady to reach a final in all the years this competition has been running.

In congratulating Chris on his success we must pay tribute to all the bowlers who came from far and wide to take part and also congratulate them on the high standard of bowling throughout the day, which kept the large crowd of spectators enthralled during the matches. The green played immaculately right to the final end, a fitting tribute to the work the green staff undertook in the days leading up to the event.

All the prizes were handed over by David McCreath on behalf of our sponsors Simpsons Malt Ltd, who continue to support the club financially with this prestigious cross border singles competition. Can we also say “thank you” to the bar convenor Dougie and his team as well as the catering staff for keeping everyone fed and watered during the day but we must also offer a special thank you to the match secretary and his team for the smooth operation at both Tweedmouth & Spittal during the day.
